Production Test Engineer | Dundee

Reporting to the Production Manager, this role will be responsible for ensuring the timely availability of test equipment for the client’s products from concept through to development. Responsibilities will include creation and development of test specifications, supporting the production test team in the development of future test capabilities and liaising with the design engineering department of various products as they reach production release.


  • Design, development and configuration of all necessary test hardware/software and operating environments as required to ensure production integrity testing
  • Reports test results and enters problems and issues into the bug database
  • Provides technical expertise to production on specific products and operating systems
  • Writes or assists in the development of test plans and test procedures
  • Completes assigned test-related tasks
  • Assists in the management of defects by database under the guidance of QA function
  • Assists in the automation of relevant test procedures
  • Assists in review of test processes as they are developed
  • To support the transfer of application knowledge from engineering to the production environment for assigned projects

Candidate Requirements

Person spec – higher weighting more important:-

  • 10 – Excellent understanding of test processes and strong experience of testing computer software
  • 10 – Ability to visualise how new designs will be tested and programmed in manufacturing efficiently
  • 10 – Worked in an Engineering environment supporting, introducing and transferring test solutions
  • 10 – Knowledge of programming languages and source control systems
  • 10 – Experience of programming in Visual Basic, or MS C++.
  • 10 – Working knowledge of communications protocols such as CANbus or RS-485
  • 10 – Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to listen, communicate and be trusted
  • 9 – Able to methodically produce the steps which exhibit bugs in the product and be able to reproduce and communicate these steps.
  • 9 – Shows initiative in gaining in-depth experience in areas of technology relevant to testing of company products
  • 9 – Shows initiative in gaining theoretical knowledge in software testing
  • 9 – Strong PC literacy – solid experience of all Microsoft office packages
  • 9 – Educated to a minimum of a HNC level in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • 9 – Sufficient knowledge/experience working within a Microsoft operating environment
  • 8 – Experience of working with automated testing tools
  • 8 – Experience of computer networking

Test Engineer – Defence Communcations

An exciting opportunity to work for this leading defence communication and high technology organisation in a role where you will be required to test new equipment manufactured by this globally recognised organisation to correct specifications to component level.

Responsibilities as a Test Engineer:

  • Provide test assistance to colleagues within the manufacturing department and support for the repair of customer returned equipment.
  • Test PCB sub assemblies and final assemblies to specification.
  • Record results on production test reports.
  • Supply the correct WIP information to supervisor relating to tasks carried out.
  • Perform faultfinding/repair on faulty equipment to component level.
  • Provide fault records and FTY information for work carried out.
  • Carry out ESD, PATS testing and equipment calibration duties as required.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience as a Test Engineer

  • ONC/OND minimum, in Electronics or equivalent (or working towards this).
  • Minimum of 2 years in relevant electronics role.
  • Computer literate.
  • Experience in analogue, digital and RF electronics within a relevant test environment.
  • Competent in use of RF test equipment.
  • Ability to follow and carry out complex test procedures.
  • Good, developing, faultfinding skills.
  • Good communications Skills both written and oral.
  • Work solo or part of a team.
